80,000 Words!

Jack and the Mountain has hit 80,000 words as of today. That means that it is at full novel length. The guidelines are, just in case you're curious:

Flash Fiction/Ultra-short Story: Up to 1,500 Words

Short story: 5,000 to 30,000 Words

Novella: 30,000 to 60,000 Words

Novel: 80,000 to 100,000 Words

Some caveats:

1. Novella ends at 60 and Novel begins at 80. This is because some novels are shorter than 80k, specifically non-fiction, young adult and some literary fiction. 60k is considered the shortest that a novel should be before it becomes a novella. Jack and the Mountain is genre fiction and the target for that is at least 80,000 words.

2. 100,000 is not the cap. It is, simply, that anything beyond that requires a lot of story to tell and the author is expected to have some succesful selling under their belt for a publisher to accept it. Stephen King, for example, can write stuff that is as long as he wants. (I should add that I don't know this to be true; I've only read it online.)

3. Some people add a category called the Novelette that exists in between short stories and novellas.

4. All of this seems to be terribly vague and that's true. You find tons of different definitions for story lengths on the web. Here is an example taken from https://www.quora.com/What%E2%80%99s-the-difference-between-a-novel-novella-and-short-story

This example may be correct but I suspect not. Notice that it claims novels start at 40,000 words. I haven't seen a publishing website yet that agrees with that number. Having said that: What do I know?

Anyway... 80,000 words. It makes me happy.
